Hornshay Farm

Winner of LABC Building Excellence Awards 2016.

Venture Property commissioned Sands to inspect and appraise the existing buildings at Hornshay Farm, Wellington.

The client’s proposals were to convert the existing arrangement of barns and outbuildings into six houses. By November 2014 work had begun to stabilise the walls. Further renovation and rebuilding continued until the project was completed in August 2015. There were several significant structural challenges with this building. Major repairs were required to the walls which were a mixture of stone, brick and cob; some needed to be rebuilt.

The existing timber lintels and brick arches needed repairs and large cracks had formed on some of the walls which required stitching.

Due to the nature of the building we also had to consider the sequence in which the project was carried out to ensure temporary stability at all times as well as long term stability.

The completed project was a winner at the LABC Building Excellence Awards 2016, topping rivals in the category of "Best Change of use of an Existing Building or Conservation".
